Davis groaned. It was HOT. Stupid desert he thought as he trudged through it. "Veemon, why didn't we bring some shade?"
"Because the only shade available was a parasol that you said was too girly." Veemon said. He was just as hunched over as Davis as they walked across the scorching sands. Davis removed his jacket and wrapped it into a turban-esque hat that he gave to Veemon.
"Here, it'll keep the sun off your head." he said as Veemon adjusted it somewhat.
"What are we doing out here anyway Davis?" Veemon asked.
"There's a Piximon that lives in this desert somewhere," Davis said, "Tai told me that back when he first came here, Piximon trained him and the others and made them better able to take on Etemon."
"Wait, didn't he trap Tai and Agumon in a cave and have everyone else clean his house?" Veemon asked.
"Yeah, but since Tai got out of the cave he probably won't use that test again," Davis said, "And his house is probably as clean as can be since everyone else had it all cleaned up."
"But Davis, we already beat MaloMyotismon, and he was like a hundred times stronger than Etemon" Veemon said, "What can Piximon offer us?"
"He can give us the same training he gave TK," Davis said, "I've thought about it, and the only difference between me and him is that he was trained by Piximon and I wasn't."
"But he also fought Devimon, Etemon, Myotismon, and the Dark Masters," Veemon said, "All you fought was the Digimon Emperor and MaloMyotismon."
"Yeah but they were worth at least as much as TJ and Tai and them did!" Davis said, making a fist and looking somewhat confrontational.
"Okay Davis, okay" Veemon said with a sigh, "So where is Piximon's place anyway?"
"Tai said it was in a jungle in this desert somewhere" Davis said, looking around.
"I don't see a jungle Davis," Veemon said. Neither did Davis. Neither of them knew that they were actually walking right next to it- less than a dozen feet away from the jungle, still hidden by Piximon's magic.

It had been several years since Piximon had trained the original DigiDestined, and here he was presented with yet another one. This was one he knew of, and one he already knew had done great things. Daisuke was the name, right? Partner was Veemon, and the two of them were headstrong but courageous. Boy, who did THAT sound like, Piximon thought with a laugh. He remembered well the lessons he had given Tai and Agumon, to help them regain their confidence and courage after the incident with Dark Digivolution. This one, however, seemed a little bit more on the clueless side. He had been walking around his compound for quite a bit of time. Sure, Piximon didn’t NEED the veil anymore, but why make it easy for those who were trying to find him. Then again, his floors really needed cleaning…
Nah, he was going to have some fun with this Daisuke person, to make sure that it was worth the training that he was going to give him. But how to do so? Well, just going up to him wouldn’t get anything accomplished, but a test of battle wouldn’t be needed since they had already defeated villains such as the Digimon Emperor and MaloMyotismon. No, he decided it would be best to try something else; Daisuke versus a force of nature. Lucky for him, there was a giant desert around him to play with.
Using his small size to his advantage, Piximon flew out into the desert, hidden from Daisuke’s site. Using his ability to manipulate the data of the Digital World, Piximon soon began to whip up a simple sand storm. With no shelter in sight, he wanted to see how Daisuke reacted, especially in regards towards his partner. Would they run for any shelter they could find? Would they press forward into the sand? It was going to be an interesting situation. Flying back to the safety of his veil, Piximon sat back and watched the fun began. [/blockquote]

Davis looked ahead, lifting his hand to his eyes to shield them from the sun. Up ahead he saw a brown fuzzy blot that hadn't been there before. It stretched form as far as he could see to the left to as afar as he could see to the right. Rubbing his eyes, Davis made a second glance and then said "Hey Veemon, do you see what I see?"
"Do you see an oasis with Gatomon swimming?" Veemon asked. Davis's left eyebrow arched and he looked down at Veemon, who had his eyes closed and a smile on his face. Giving his friend a knuckle sandwich to the head, he said "No you idiot! Stop daydreaming and look that way" he pointed while Veemon rubbed his head and looked forward.
"You woke me up from a daydream to look at a sandstorm?" he asked. They both stopped walking, blinked, looked at each other, then said "Sandstorm!?" simultaneously. They looked at the rapidly approaching storm and then looked backwards, then all around them. No shelter in site.
"Maybe we should turn back?" Veemon suggested in a clearly hesitant voice. Davis's expression was equally fearful of the approaching sandstorm. He swallowed a lump in his throat then closed his eyes. Slowly, his fearful frown turned into a scowl and he opened his eyes back up.
Holding his fist towards the sandstorm, as if challenging it to a fight, he said "Heck no Veemon. We couldn't possibly outrun it if we tried, and since we've got nothing to hide behind, we just need to tackle it head on." He stood up straighter as the hot wind began to whip his hair about. He pulled his goggles down, now more grinning than scowling. "Forward!" he said with vigor- contagious as ever, as now Veemon was marching alongside him into the wall of sand as it tumbled towards them.
The sand hit them like a wall at first, the wind picking up and the tiny rock particles pelting them violently. Their movement stopped for a second, but they leaned forward and continued to move. "See Veemon?" Davis asked, shouting over the wind and using his hand to prevent sand from getting into his nose and mouth, "If the sandstorm is coming this way and we keep going into it like this, we'll get through it twice as quick."

From the safety of his home, Piximon could safely watch as the two partners began to be attacked by a giant sandstorm. He was also listening in on their conversation, just to see what kind of things they were saying about it. He had to join Davis in arching an eyebrow at Veemon’s comments, but just kept the idea in his head for possible future things. Besides, the sandstorm was coming; they weren’t going to have time to daydream for long.
The whole thing started with them looking kind of scared, which was to be expected. It was how they would react to that fear that would determine what to do with them. They looked for some shelter and then, failing that…decided to face the sandstorm on their own. Well, at least those goggles would do something for them. And he had to give them credit for their courage. However, at the same time, it was kind of stupid of them to do so. Taking a mental note, Piximon figured out what he was going to have to teach these two. But there was still plenty of time to mess with them, and Veemon’s earlier comment had given him an idea on something to do about that….
-------------------
As Davis and them struggled against it, the sandstorm soon began to subside as Piximon cut it off. Within minutes of starting, it was over, the desert once again safe and quiet. However, the little trickster soon had another plan in motion, and as everything settled and the desert revealed itself, a little surprise was waiting…and a choice.
Within site there was an oasis, with sparkling water and relaxing palm trees. The site itself would be wonderful in the desert, but there was even more to it. Taking a cue from Veemon, and the knowledge he had been given through rumors, stories, and some contact with the former Chosen Children, he had also placed Kari and her partner Gatomon. They were of course relaxing in the oasis, with the human girl in what humans would call a one-piece swimsuit. The two of them were having fun, relaxing, and splashing each other a little. Over all, a fun time for all….and it wasn’t long before they invited Davis to join. Not that they were the real ones of course; all just an illusion of the desert and Piximon’s “magic.”
”Hey, Davis, come on over and join us. It’s just me and Gatomon!”
However, the test was soon to come. At about the same distance from Davis, there was also a cry for help. There was a group of Pyocomon’s being pushed around and teased by an older, larger, Piyomon. It was obvious that the Digimon were feeling bad and in distress. Would Davis come to their rescue or join with his friend Kari? That was something Piximon wanted to see. [/blockquote]

The sandstorm subsided. Davis and Veemon breathed easier once the sand was gone and, though a little sore from it- sand always gets into places it should really not be in- they felt a little cheerier. Even moreso when they heard the sound of water up ahead. Rubbing sand from their eyes, Davis and Veemon both had similar expressions of jaw-dropping-shock and sheer-joy when they saw Kari and Gatomon swimming around an oasis, inviting them over to join them.
"Hey!" Davis yelled back, waving his hand. The two seemed to find renewed energy at the site of the girls and headed towards them faster than they had recently been trudging. On the way, however, they heard the sounds of the Pyocomon being picked on by a Piyomon. Davis looked towards the sounds and saw the scuffle. He turned to Kari and waved his hand "Be there in a minute!" he called.
He grabbed Veemon's arm, who was running towards the oasis, oblivious to the Pyocomon predicament and said "Lets save these Pyocomon first then go for a swim."
"But, but," Veemon said before Davis bonked him on the head again, "Okayyyyy" he said with a sigh. PUtting on his game face, he ran alongside davis towards teh Piyomon.
"Hey! Birdbrain!" Davis shouted as they approached the bully, "Leave those Pyocomon alone!" He didn't bother thinking what a bunch of low level digimon were doing out in this desert alone with no shelter in sight.

Piximon laid back and watched as Davis and Veemon made there way out of the sandstorm and into the safety of...well, a non-sandstorm desert. It wasn't long before they noticed the Kari and Gatomon illusion, and very quickly regained strength. Well, he knew what to do if he needed to get them moving. Actually, it was kind of scary how fast they were running; they must have really liked this friend of theirs. He was afraid for a moment they wouldn't even see the Digimon in trouble at this rate of running. However, soon Davis seemed to notice them, and Piximon waited to see.
Davis apparently had his priorities straight as he told Kari to wait a moment and dragged Veemon to go after the younger Digimon being bullied. Veemon seemed to haven't noticed them; odd, the human was the more responsible this time around. Normally it seemed to be the other way around. An interesting turn of events. Well, he had seen enough to get what he wanted to know. Grabbing his spear, Piximon turned off the illusion and flew out of his home...
Meanwhile, as Davis ran towards the Digimon, they soon faded from his site, as if they were never there to begin with. The same happened to the oasis as "Kari and Gatomon" laughed. Soon he would be all alone in the desert, but it wasn't long until Piximon arrived in front of Davis.
"Hello there Davis. I hope you didn't get hurt through any of my illusions. I needed to test you first and figure out what kind of person you were. I'm Piximon, trainer of Chosen Children, including the first generation that your friend Kari was from."
With that, Piximon floated in front of Davis....and smacked him on the top of the head with the blunt end of his spear before doing the same to Veemon. Not even letting them recover, he floated backwards to make his point.
"And that was for your first mistake. When Tai was here, his issue was a lack of courage and self-doubt from Agumon's evolution into SkullGreymon. Your issue seems to be too much courage as to be reckless. I had hoped you'd try to get out of the sandstorm, not trudge through it aimlessly. Now then, follow me. We got work to do."
With that, Piximon started to fly towards his home, not even looking back to see if Davis was responding to his statements or following him. [/blockquote]

Davis and Veemon charged towards the Piyomon, getting more psyched up to help the Pyocomon. But, just as they got there and Veemon launched forward to deliver his Vee Headbutt....but the digimon all vanished!
"What the..." Davis said, surprised, as Veemon headbutted nothing but sand. He turned and watched the oasis fade away with Kari waving at him with a smile. "What the heck is going on!" he yelled, pulling at his hair. Thats when Piximon appeared, surprising both Davis and Veemon.
"Oh, so you're Piximon," Davis said, "Thats good, because Veemon and I were-" He was cut off by a loud 'thwack' noise that took him a moment to register was him being hit on the head by Piximon.
"YAAAHHHHH!" he yelled, grabbing his head and rubbing the part that was just smacked, "What was that for?" As Piximon explained the problem of too much courage, Davis didn't entirely listen and just kept muttering and rubbing his head.
The part about going headlong into the sandstorm got through his curses, however and he said "Hey wait a minute! There was no place to hide and no way to outrun a hundred mile per hour wind! The only way to get through the sandstorm fast was to go into it and get past it as soon as possible!" he scowled as he saw Piximon just flying away, seeming to just ignore him.
Sharing a look with Veemon, who looked more miserable than flustered, and also rubbing his head where he was thwacked, they followed Piximon across the sands. "So what's the solution for too much courage? You gonna paint my stomach yellow? Make me eat some lilly-livers?" he chuckled at what he thought was wit.

Piximon just laughed when he saw the Veemon headbutt the sand. Poor kid didn’t even know the Digimon were illusions. It obviously was upsetting Davis. Oh well, what was training without a little frustration and pain? It would be miniscule compared to what he was going to make him do. That statue of himself at home had gotten pretty dirty; it sure could use a good scrubbing…
However, for now he just had to enjoy whacking Davis upside the head with his spear; the blunt side of course. After all, safety first. With the mistake explained, Piximon simply just started to float away, ignoring Davis’s pleas. Excuses, excuses; just because it didn’t look like there was an option out didn’t mean there wasn’t one. If he had just took the time to think and look around and not charge on ahead first, he could have found something. Still, they would have time to learn that lesson, after giving his floors a good scrub and whatever other chores he could give them.
As they moved along, Davis made what he apparently thought was a joke. Piximon just stayed quiet for a moment before stopping. Yep, this was the barrier all right; now was time for a little pizazz for the training. Twirling his spear around, Piximon began to use his magic to create portal to inside the barrier. As he did so, he spoke.
”Actually, the first thing you’re going to have to do is get to my home right beyond here.”
With that the portal open, revealing a giant forest in front of them. In the middle of it was a really tall mountain with a mansion on top. Even from this distance it was obvious there was going to be a lot of stairs. Piximon simply floated forwards towards them, leading Davis through the forest to the stair case. This was going to be another test; he knew Davis was determined and good-hearted. Now was the time to see what he could endure and, more importantly, how smart he could be at knowing how to conserve his energy for when it was really needed. After all, if he spent it all on these steps, he’d be dead tired when he had to scrub the statues and floors.
”Now then, the first step of your straining is simple, yep yep. Just simply climb up all these stairs to the top where my house is. I’ll explain the rest of your training at the top. Have fun, yep yep.”
With that, Piximon flew up, but when he was out of sight, he moved back to hide and take a look at what Davis and Veemon would do… [/blockquote]

Davis remained silent after his joke fell on dead ears, or so it seemed. He was actually about two steps away from asking 'How far away is your place' when Piximon spoke up. The little pink furball twirled his spear around and the air started to ripple before what could only be described as a portal opened up, showing a small area of a vast jungle.
"Woah" Davis and Veemon said as one. The jungle was filled with tall trees and thick green leaves. Bushes and shrubbery and vines and grass...all manner of flourishing, water-guzzling life. In the middle of a desert! "Woah" they said again as they entered. While the temperature was about the same- a little cooler, thanks to the shade- the humidity increased significantly.
The duo followed Piximon through the jungle on foot as he hovered effortlessly to the base of the mountain. There were stairs and Piximon said that he would meet them at the top. The trainer and digimon looked at the stairs dauntingly. "Well," Davis said, looking around, "Do you see a button or switch?"
"Why are you looking for a switch?" Veemon asked.
"I'm hoping that these stairs are really an escalator...or there's a hidden elevator around here." Davis said as he started to look behind rocks and under nearby bushes, "No one would have this many stairs if he ever expects guests."
"But, doesn't he just gotta fly?" Veemon asked, "Why would he have an escalator?"
"For when guests come over," Davis said, "I just said that."
"But what if you're wrong?" Veemon said, "Won't we be late?"
"We'll only be a few more minutes," Davis said, "If the button's not around here, we'll start going up. Okay?"
"Okay," Veemon said, preferring the idea of an escalator to walking up a mountain. About five minutes later, when the pair had decided that there was no secret switch to be found, they started up the stairs.
The first quarter of the mountain wasn't so bad- just a steady climb up stairs. Davis explained to Veemon that if they paced themselves, they would be able to get to the top without feeling like crap.
It was as they were approaching the half way mark that they were practically dragging their knees and panting. A short ways back, Davis had the bright idea of running- figuring that the ground they would cover would be worth the slower pace afterwards. He didn't anticipate how much energy the incline would cause him to expend and now the two were near enough exhausted so that their progress was only about a hundred steps an hour...if they could keep moving for an hour.
"This...mountain...just...keeps...going...up" Davis groaned between breaths.
"I..wish...I...was...Raidramon..." Veemon panted, "...then..I..could...run...up...this...mountain...easily."
"Yeah.." Davis said..."And...I...could...ride...you..." About ten steps later both of them stopped and looked at each other with big eyes.
"Great idea!" Davis shouted, digging for his digivice. He got it, selected the Digi Egg of Friendship and said "Here we go!"
A flash of light later, Veemon had armor digivolved into Raidramon, the Storm of Friendship. He felt energized and ready to go. Davis climbed up onto his back and the Raidramon bolted for the summit.

After hiding from view to spy on them, Piximon watched as they started off looking for something. Were they trying to find a switch or something? Hah, that was funny; there was no short cuts in Piximon’s training regime, nope nope. They were going to have to go up the stairs the hard way if they were going to try and conquer these stairs. After all, the stairs were a test; what would be the point of a test if there was a cheat built right into it like that? Eventually they figured out that there was going to be no button, and soon they headed up the stairs.
At first it seemed they were going to be fine; a nice steady climb up the stairs at a good pace. About halfway through, however, and they were dead tired. Davis had decided the smart idea of RUNNING up stairs…who thought like that? Sure, if it was flat ground it might be smart, but stairs? That was just way to much effort to waste; after all, climbing stairs was more tiresome than flat ground, yep yep. Still, he was going to wait and see how this all turned out.
All of a sudden there was a flash, and Veemon was replaced by his, what, armor Digivolve form of Raidramon. Soon the two were bolting towards the summit, and Pixmon flew straight up to meet them. It was a good idea; take advantage of the abilities of the various Digivolving to solve the issues. Still, Flaredramon could have been a good choice; he could fly right? Whatever the case, Piximon gave him points for figuring out a faster way up. However, with the fact that Digimon are usually tired out after the effects of Digivolving, Veemon was going to be tired after all was said and done. When the two of them finally arrived, Piximon began his next phase of his plan.
”All right you two, you got up here pretty fast yep yep. I hope you still have plenty of energy left though cause now we’re going to work on your endurance.”
Flying on up over to the statue of him, Piximon conjured up two buckets and a mop right in front of Davis and Veemon.
”You’re going to clean up this entire statue of me. When you’re doing, you can finally get some food, yep yep. Take your time and all that. I’ll be watching you.”
With that Piximon flew off, got a comfortable spot to watch, and tried to think up of other ways to test Davis. His main problem right now seemed to be he just wanted to power through things; Raidramon was a good idea, but was basically following the same principle. That early point where he was just being steady with a few breaks was good. Then he got impatient, ran, and then had to resort to a last ditch effort to make it. Patience was something he needed to learn, yep yep. But how exactly to do that… [/blockquote]

Davis had been happy when they made it to the top. Proud, even. And excited! He was encouraged by the achievement and enthusiastic to move on. Veemon, however, had reverted from his digivolved form and was quite tired. Davis had been a second away from kneeling down to console his friend and tell him about food that they were sure to get, but then Piximon appeared.
"He-" Davis had been about to tell Piximon that Veemon needed some food when the little furball told them to clean the statue and left them there with some buckets and a mop. "STUPID LAZY PIXIE!" Davis yelled emphatically. He looked at Veemon who got up on shaky legs and sighed "Take a nap Vee, I'll get started."
"Gee, thanks Davis." Veemon said, falling backwards and asleep on the spot. Davis sighed and tilted his head to pick some sand from his ear then grabbed the mop. Sticking it into a bucket, he got it lathered then got to work, sliding the suddzy mop across the dirty statue, grumbling and muttering all the while.
An hour later he was somewhere between a third and half done when he set the mop down and took a seat himself, leaning against one side of the statue. "Ahh, quick break" he said, resting his head on the statue and closing his eyes, "Just a couple minutes then I'll finish this thing up..." he said.
He didn't know he had fallen asleep.
