Types/Attributes/Families
__________________________________________________________________
Here you will find information related to the Type/Attribute/Family categories that Digimon are designated in. To a degree this is mostly flavor information to expand upon a Digimon, but there is some slight effects on gamplay as well (as described in the sections). Therefore, while not a vital piece of information, it may be worth your time to read the following information as well.
__________________________________________________________________
Type
A form of classification, all Digimon species are given a “type”. The type is usually a representation of the physical appearance of a Digimon, such as Agumon being a “Reptile” type or Angemon an “Angel Type”. This is a rather trivial piece of information, if interesting. Some types of Digimon may be filled with dozens of Digimon while others have a single Digimon in. The importance of types may be that some groups of Digimon (such as the Seven Demon Lords) may be grouped based up on type.
Attribute
There are a total of three attributes that a Digimon can be classified: Data, Vaccine, Virus. It is possible for a Digimon to be an “Unidentified” attribute.
There is a bit of a “rock-paper-scissors” arrangement among Attributes: Virus beats Data, Data beats Vaccine, and Vaccine beats Virus. However, this is not highly important if the enemy is of a higher level of Digivolution. There are times, however, that it can play a role: for example, Angemon (a Vaccine Holy Digimon) is capable of holding his against higher leveled Virus types, such as Myotismon.
Note that attributes do not decide morality. Evil Digimon are not always Virus, and vice versa, for example. There are in fact good Virus Digimon, such as Ken’s Wormmon. There are, however, usually variations of the same Digimon based upon attribute, though usually the only major difference is in the colors and some attacks.
Families
Digimon are also capable of being broken up into one of 10 different Digimon Families. Again, these families are broken up usually in similar physical looks and capabilities, such as Dragon Roar Digimon resembling Digimon. Some families have slight advantages over others (for example, Virus Busters over Dark Area). They can also help in identify where a Digimon made by found. Below are the various families and information related to them:
Nature Spirits: Generic monsters and beasts. Also represents grasslands and canyons.
Deep Savers: Aquatic or ice-related Digimon. Can represent the ocean or arctic.
Nightmare Soldiers: Darkness or spirit based Digimon, or Digimon based on traditional "Halloween" monsters like vampires, werewolves, or Japanese youkai and demons. Can represent haunted or cursed areas.
Wind Guardians: Flying, air, or plant based Digimon. Can represent forests and the sky.
Metal Empire: Machine, cyborg, or other mechanical Digimon. Can represent cities and factories.
Unknown: Mutant, unusual, or strange Digimon. Can represent junkyards and other strange places.
Dark Area: Villanous, demonic, terrifying, evil Digimon. Can represent the Dark Area of the Digital World.
Virus Busters: Heroic or angelic Digimon, often includes main characters from the anime or manga. Can represent the sky or heavens.
Dragon’s Roar: Draconic Digimon.
Jungle Troopers: Plant or Insect based Digimon.
